Wireline-Conveyed Thermit-Jet Cutting Tool (WTCT) 

The Wireline-Conveyed Thermit-Jet Cutting Tool (WTCT) is a specialized tool designed for the oil and gas industry, specifically for cutting tubing, casing, and other downhole tubulars without the use of explosives.

This tool provides a safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional explosive cutting methods.

    Wireline-Conveyed Thermit-Jet Cutting Tool (WTCT)

    Vigor Wireline-Conveyed Thermit-Jet Cutting Tool (WTCT) consists of an anchoring device and a combustor.

    The anchoring device anchors the cutting tool to the inner wall of the pipe to be cut, preventing the tool from moving during the cutting process; the combustor produces a high-temperature and high-pressure molten metal fluid that scrubs and ablates the pipe, thus achieving the purpose of the cutting.

    Safety option is considered, when the instrument cannot be unanchored during job, through the input of a 230mA current or lift the wireline more than 1.6T force to shear the shear pins and release the tool string.

    Achor System and Combustor

    Working Principles

    • 1) Lower the Cutting Tool to the target position through wireline
    • 2) Operate the ground control system to anchor it first
    • 3) Ignite the combustor to cut the pipe column
    • 4) Operate the ground control system to release the string from anchoring
    • 5) Pull out the tool and do surface maintenance

    The thermit cartridge quantities listed in the tables are for reference when the external pressure on the thermit-jet cutting assembly is less than 10,000 psi. For external pressure between 10,000 and 15,000 psi, one additional cartridge is required.

    Application 1

    Current overload protection shutdown, downhole pump card, pre-cut 2-3/8" tubing, cutting depth 825.55m.

    The Φ43 Wireline Non-explosive Downhole Cutter was used for construction, and the suspension weight was lifted by 8t, and the cutting was successfully completed at 804.56m, and the total cutting time was about 6min.The incision is neat, no flanging, no expansion diameter.

    Application 2

    When the packer was unsealed, the pipe string was disconnected from 1939.19m, and the lower drill pipe failed to be salvaged and unsealed, and the 2-7/8" tubing was cut through the 2-7/8" drill pipe, and the pre-cutting depth was 3073.00m.

    The Φ43 Wireline Non-explosive Downhole Cutter was used for construction, and the suspension weight was lifted to 40t, and the cutting was successfully completed at 2788.32m, and the total cutting time was about 9min.

    Application 3

    The well tool went down to 4542.76m to meet the card, pre-cut 2-7/8" tubing, the cutting depth was 4536.00m, and the well temperature was 151°C.

    The well was constructed withΦ43 Wireline Non-explosive Downhole Cutter, lifting the suspension weight of 54t, and successfully completing the cutting at 4536.00m, with a total cutting time of about 10min.
