Vigor Hydraulic-Set Retrievable ESP Packer(VHSP)

Vigor Hydraulic-Set Retrevable ESP Packer(VHSP) is a specialized downhole sealing device used in wells equipped with Electric Submersible Pumps (ESPs). It provides a pressure-tight seal between the production tubing and the casing while allowing essential components, such as the ESP power cable and control lines, to pass through the packer body. Please don't hesitate to contact us for more detailed product information.

    Product Description

Vigor Hydraulic-Set Retrevable ESP Packer(VHSP) is a single string, hydraulic-set, tubing-retrievable packer designed for well using ESP system. It incorporates multiple  pass-through ports that can be used to accommodate an electric cable, gas vent valve, chemical injection valve, down-hole control line or other ESP accessories.

This ESP packer is installed with the completion tubing and is set by applying pressure to the tubing. A bi-directional carburized slips is utilized to hold the packer in place and minimizing the risk of casing damage. For big size packer, a hold down button slip will be configured to against differential pressure from below.

Retrieval is accomplished with a straight upward pull on tubing without a retrieving  tool. And the shear release value can be adjusted on request at the field.

    Applications

    Vigor Hydraulic-Set Retrievable ESP Packer(VHSP)
    • ESP Completions – Designed for electric submersible pump installations.
    • Single-String Production Wells – Ideal for simplified production well completions.
    • Vertical & Deviated Wells: Their compact design and hydraulic setting make them effective in highly deviated or horizontal wellbores where mechanical setting is difficult.
    • Zonal Isolation: Used to isolate different production zones while maintaining power to a pump located in a lower section of the well.
    • Gas Venting: Many ESP packers include a dedicated port for a gas vent valve, allowing annular gas to bypass the packer and prevent gas interference in the pump

    Working Principle of ESP Packer

Step 1: Installation (Making the Run)

The ESP assembly (pump, intake, seal, motor) is made up at the surface. The power cable is strapped to the tubing as it is run into the well. The ESP Packer is installed as part of the tubing string, usually above the pump assembly.

Crucial Detail: Where the cable passes through the packer, it is spliced or run through the designated "feed-through" ports. The packer body is designed to protect the cable from being crushed when the packer sets.

    Step 2: Positioning

The entire completion string is lowered until the ESP assembly and packer reach the desired depth (e.g., just above the production zone).

    Step 3: Setting (Activation)

Once at depth, the packer must be set to create the seal. This is usually done hydraulically:

    • A steel ball or drop bar is pumped or dropped down the tubing.
    • It lands in a seat within the packer.
    • Hydraulic pressure is applied from the surface down the tubing.
    • The pressure pushes against a piston in the packer, which compresses the packing elements.
    • The packing elements expand outward, gripping the casing wall and creating a high-pressure seal.
    • Simultaneously, the feed-through system seals around the electrical cables, preventing gas or fluid from migrating past the packer through the cable ports.

    Step 4: Operation (Producing)

    With the packer set:

    • Isolation:The reservoir below the packer is isolated from the annulus (the space between tubing and casing) above the packer.
    • Production:Fluids from the reservoir must now flow through the pump (if it's a standard "tubing flow" design) or in some specialized "reverse flow" designs, around the motor for cooling before entering the pump.
    • Annulus Function:The sealed annulus above the packer can now be used for other purposes, such as monitoring casing pressure, injecting chemicals (if there is a separate chemical line), or producing gas from a different zone.

    Step 5: Retrieval (Pulling Out)

If the ESP fails and needs to be pulled out:

    • The tubing is pulled upward with tension.
    • The packer has a release mechanism (either by straight pull, rotation, or chemical release) that un-sets the slips and retracts the sealing elements.
    • The packer and the entire ESP string are pulled to the surface. The feed-through seals are designed to release from the cable without severing it (or in some cases, the cable is cut at the packer and re-spliced later).
